Creating a Break Room Employees Enjoy

Posted on: December 15, 2015

Each day, most of your employees probably step into the break room at least once. Whether it’s just to say hello to coworkers during lunch, to microwave their meal, or to sit down and take a break from the workday, a break room is often used by employees and should be an inviting area that employees enjoy.

If your employees aren’t using the break room, you should be asking yourself why. Could the area need to be freshened up? Are there not essential equipment employees are looking for, such as a microwave? Whether you are designing a break room for the first time or are simply looking to update your current area, don’t forget the essential items employees are looking for below.

Lunch Tables

No break room would be complete without a few tables for people to gather around and enjoy their lunch. Lunch tables allow for interaction between employees—which is great for engagement, teamwork, and overall employee happiness!

Appliances

Every break room should have the three essential appliances: a microwave, refrigerator, and a coffee machine. Many people bring frozen meals into work for lunch because it’s fast, easy, and delicious. Supply enough microwaves for the number of staff members you have to ensure everyone can heat their lunch without waiting in line during their whole break. In addition, supply a place where employees can keep their lunch—such as a refrigerator. Not everyone wants to keep a cold sandwich in their lunchbox for four or more hours.

We also recommend you have coffee machines in the break room. Sometimes, workers need an afternoon pick-me-up. Allowing employees to step into the break room for a few minutes to make a coffee will give them the break the need to be productive the rest of the afternoon.

Decorations

Your break room shouldn’t be an extension of the office. It should a fun and inviting area for employees to step out to give their brain a break. Add a little life to the break area by adding decorations and painting the walls to add some color.

Comfortable Seating

A break room isn’t just a place to sit and eat lunch. It’s a place where employees can step away from their desk and take a break from work. Allow employees to relax by installing comfortable seating options, such as couches or cushioned chairs.
